PE CONSULTATION COUNCIL

The PECC exists to promote the sporting needs of students and provide a link between students and staff. As a Specialist College for Sport our PECC provides a very valuable role in the delivery of sport across the curriculum.

Student representatives meet regularly to discuss sporting matters within the college - if you have any ideas or concerns about sporting matters please see your year rep.

Physical Education College Council Meeting

Friday 16th October 2009 -Period 4 – Meeting Room

1. Leadership

The students agreed that their main role as leaders was to be role model and encourage participation. They also accepted that it was really important to be reliable.

They said that the lunchtime leadership had not got into full swing this term and that they have competitions planned for after half term.
They believe that it would be a good idea to formally link leaders to a club. They felt they could only run clubs when they had a member of staff directly supervising them. The ratio discussed was one member of staff with three leaders.

The PE team will arrange for leaders to be involved in all activities.

2. Extra-curricular activities

Students said that they liked the range of opportunities which were available.

The girls on the council said that they liked working in a single sex environment and thought that more girls would participate if there were more girls only clubs.

Students would like a greater range of house competition to run at lunchtime. They felt that more students would participate if there were regular house events. They said that many students are now motivated by dog merits. Student leaders should be running the house competitions

3. The new timetable

Students liked the fact that they now had extra time for PE. They enjoyed the double lesson but the single lesson was too short. However, they also said that the double was too long for students who did not like PE. Students liked the idea of either doing an alternative sport in the single lesson, or focussing on skills to allow them more time to play games in the double. The year 10 students liked the fact that they were doing the JSL in the single as the lessons could be more focused.

Students in KS4 said that they would appreciate more relaxed and recreational lessons to help them unwind from examination subjects.

4. Kit

Students said that they liked the school PE kit. However, they did not like the fact that some students did not wear it.

Students brought up the issue of school team kit (especially Netball). They said that it was embarrassing turning up to a fixture with students wearing a range of different kit. It was agreed that the PE department would look into providing the netball team with a kit, and that staff would make it clear to all team members that they must wear the correct shorts and socks to fixtures.

5. Get Set network

Students were introduced to the Olympic Get Set programme. They were given details of how to log onto the student web site. Students thought it would be a good idea for the school to apply for a Get Set Mark. Students agreed that they would look at the web site and try and think of some ways in which the Olympic Values could be used to improve our school.

The young ambassadors are already aware of the values and use it in their work with primary schools.

6. AOB

Dance Mat Training – this takes place on Monday after school. Students need to attend if they wish to lead dance mat sessions.

Wii Olympics – Members of PECC will be managing teams for this event.

Website – PECC members were asked to look at the website and feedback any comments about it.
