Robert Thomas to make debut for Quins RL
1 of 4
Student debuts for Quins RLHarlequins RL Head Coach Brian McDermott has confirmed he will field a strong side for next Tuesday's friendly against the London Skolars, with only a few injury affected players sitting the game out.

McDermott has named the full first team squad for the game with the exception of Chris Melling, who has had a recurrence of the groin injury he suffered making his debut for Great Britain last June, Gareth Haggerty due to a shoulder injury and David Tootill who is recovering following a knee reconstruction in the close season.

In addition to those players in the Quins first team squad McDermott has selected four players from the Quins Academy ranks; Rob Thomas, Dylan Skee, Dave Williams and Jack Graves, to feature in Tuesday's match.

According to McDermott these players have the potential to reach Super League standard and he is delighted to give them the opportunity to showcase their skills amongst the first team players.

'The boys were outstanding last year for the 18's and 21's Academy sides. They have been doing some training with the first team and have been very, very good. I want to see if they can replicate that in a game.' Both the coaching staff and players are keen to get back on the pitch after a long off-season.

McDermott has said: 'From a coach's point of view we are really looking forward to the game. It is going to be the first test for what we have been putting in place during the pre-season. 'The players are really chomping at the bit to play and get into the season. They will be going at it 100%.'

Darren Reed and Olsi Krasniqi selected to play for England Under 16's
2 of 4

Image of England U16's RL playerHarlequins Rugby League's U16 Scholarship players, Darren Reed and Olsi Krasniqi, received the positive news they had been anxiously awaiting regarding their selection for England U16's, following their inclusion in the preparation squad last October.

Both players have made the final 19 man squad that will prepare for a fixture across the Channel against France over Easter.

Darren and Olsi both attend Feltham Community College which has an excellent record in producing quality players, a number of which have joined the Harlequins RL Academy, including Rob Thomas who made his first team debut in the Capital Challenge against the London Skolars last month.

Feltham Community College has also had great success in the Carnegie Champion Schools tournament. This success is a reflection of the school's dedicated Physical Education Department, in particular the hard work of both Jon Cadogan and James Lawson, who have established Rugby League as the school's main sport.

Image of England U16's RL playerPhil Jones, Harlequins Rugby League Player Performance Manager, believes both players have exceptional talent and has described them by saying: 'Darren is a hard running Centre who has a strong hand off and good offload. Selection for the U16's builds on last years good work where he played for England U15's in a victory over Wales U16's.'

'Olsi is a nuggety Prop who enjoys all the unglamorous sides of the role with a tough tackle technique and the ability to dominate an opponent in the collision' he added.

Jones is delighted by their selection for England saying: 'I am pleased for both Darren and Olsi as they are both dedicated young players who want to succeed in Rugby League, also it is the first time as far as I am aware that the club has had 2 players in the final squad for England U16's. The last player who managed to be selected at this age group was Joe Mbu.'

'It is also a great pat on the back for volunteers like Jon Cadogan and James Lawson who put lots of hours of their own personal time into developing and encouraging these players.'

As well as playing for their school team both Darren and Olsi are mainstays for West London Sharks where they are coached by Dan Steel, Harlequins Rugby League Development Manager.

Student Ben Alade signs Academy Contract
3 of 4

A-level student Ben Alade recently signed a two-year academy playing contract with Quins Rugby League.

Ben, who is the first Feltham Community College player to sign a contract with Quins, has been playing since the age of 11, when he joined the college as a Year 7 student.
Despite having never played rugby before, he quickly became part of the team that won four successive South of England titles.

Ben was then selected for West London service area and the South of England squad, before gaining his first cap for England against Wales in 2004.

He hopes to break into the first team squad and to represent Quins in Super League. A spokesman for the college said: "The college is very proud of Ben's achievements. "He has worked really hard to get where he is today and is a great example for our younger students.

"We are all looking forward to seeing him in Super League in the coming years!"
