| The
Year 8 girls team made history earlier this week when they secured
their place in the Girls Carnegie Champion School's National Finals.
The
team which received coaching through the Harlequins Rugby League
community programme were unbeaten on their way to becoming the first
London girls team ever to reach the national finals. Even after
a gruelling 5 hour coach trip to Wigan, the girls – which
featured a heavy West London Jets presence - managed to beat teams
from rugby league hotbeds including Wigan, Halifax and Cumbria.
In
the semi-final the girls from south west London beat St John Fisher
school of Wigan 8-4 to book a fixture against Castleford High School
in the National Final on 27th August.
It is the first time in the history of the Champion Schools programme
that a girls team from London have reached the National Final.
Harlequins
Rugby League women and girls development officer, Aran Quinn said:
“I am really proud of all the girls; they played absolutely
fantastic rugby. It also shows how well our region is developing.
I look forward to the girls bringing home the silverware and becoming
the best year 8 team in the country!”
Everyone
at Harlequins Rugby League would like to say a big well done to
everyone involved.
