Flexible Learning Week 4 - International - Monday 31st April 2012

Flexible Learning Week 4 - InternationalAcross the school year we have five flexible learning weeks, where students study cross curricular projects and their normal lessons are linked through a common theme and learning style.

The fourth of our flexible learning weeks this year commenced on Monday 30th April. The common theme was ‘International’. One of the days in the week is a ‘drop down day’ (Red Day) where students work together on particular active learning projects

See our Photo Gallery for all images from our Flexible Learning Week.

See Forthcoming Events for details of our next Flexible Learning Week.

Students in Year 7

Took part in the Creative Olympics, a house event which involved choosing their own teams and two of the cross-curricular workshops on offer that they wished to attend, all workshops this year had an Olympic theme. The workshops included ‘Street Party’ – a combination of Drama and Technology; ‘Olympic Cuisine’ – combining Art and Food Technology ‘International Pride’ – a Music and English collaboration looking at the history and lyrics of national anthems.

Students in Year 8

Focused on Fair-trade, taking part in a ‘Business Enterprise’ activity. The whole year group worked hard to develop, market and present their own Fair-trade products which were judged by ‘Dragons’ from local business and industry!

Students in Year 9

Were spies for the day cracking codes, listening into secret French conversations, being trained in Martial Arts and self-defence and planning their route through enemy territories. Other students in the year group had a day of international culture and an introduction to aspects of the RE GCSE. This involved a clay workshop from Feltham Arts, where they made idols, a Yoga session and a debate on Capital Punishment.

3rd May – Key Stage 4 and 5

Students in Year 10

Had their first taste of work experience, by taking part in an industry day. The RAF and the Army were on site putting the students through their paces. They were welcomed at local International businesses including BP, IBM and British Airways. Some of our students were lucky enough to see how a major London hotel (‘The Metropolitan’) operates. Here the students were received professionally at the front desk and escorted to a presentation room. They watched a presentation regarding the chain of hotels and its owner, and found out that David Beckham had stayed there at a cost of £3000 a night. This certainly raised some eyebrows.
The feedback from the companies was that FCC students were a credit to themselves, their families and the college! Well done Year 10.

In addition to this those students who study Geography, Childcare and Sport and Leisure took part educational visits related to their subjects.

Students in Year 11, 12 and 13

Focussed on their exams and had various sessions of revision skills, coursework completion and exam preparation.

Good Luck to all our students taking exams in the next few weeks.

Flexible Learning Week News

The next Flexible learning week will be 25th -29th June. This is ‘National Sports Week’ where students across the country participate in sporting activities. The highlight of National Schools Sports Week will be our school ‘Olympics Day’ on the 29th June. During the day, students will be given the choice to participate in a range of sporting and non-sporting activities with an Olympic theme.

Sports will include traditional games such as netball and badminton along with other activities such as weightlifting and judo. Students who don’t want to play sport can take alternative roles such as being journalists for the day or do alternative Olympic themed workshops in Drama, Dance, History and Art.

Joining us on the day will be ex-student and professional freestyle footballer Colin Nell, BMX world champion Mike Mullen and international athlete and gladiator Jenny Pacey.

See our Forthcoming Events for more details.
